Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine uses harmless amounts of radioactive substances to image specific parts of the body and treat disease. Nuclear materials are ingested or injected into the bloodstream to create radioactive tracers. Then, imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), cardiovascular imaging, or bone scanning are used to diagnose disease. This includes detection of cancer or the spread of cancer, detecting fractures, which cannot be seen on x-rays, and evaluating the function of kidneys, lungs, stomach, and thyroid.

The radioactive substances that are injected or ingested do not harm the body because they decay quickly, have lower radiation levels than even an X-ray or CT scan, and are eliminated quickly.

Nuclear medicine also includes radiation therapy, which is often used to treat cancer. Because rapidly multiplying cells, like those found in many types of cancer, are more strongly affected by radiation than are regular cells, radiation can be an effective treatment. Its effectiveness comes as a result of those rapidly multiplying cells self-destructing because they are unable to repair the damage radiation does to their DNA. Normal cells that multiply more slowly have time to repair the damage.
